“Try not to become a (person) of success. Try to become a (person) of value.”
Those wise words were spoken by one of the greatest minds in human history, Albert Einstein. We couldn’t think of a better way to begin this article than with a quote from one of the most successful people in history describing what mattered most to him. Success to Einstein wasn’t determined by his job title or what was written about him in the papers, success was about utilizing a valuable skill set for the greater good of mankind. This is an idea that working people everywhere can get behind. But in order to be of value, you must first acquire a valuable skill set. This can very often be easier said than done.
In the manufacturing industry, every employee is essential not only to the success of their factory, but to the success of whatever industry they are manufacturing parts and components for. This is why it’s essential for individuals to have an understanding of the skills and knowledge that are required to succeed in the manufacturing industry, but acquiring those skills has historically been challenging for job seekers. The Advanced Manufacturing Training Expansion Program (AMTEP) is seeking to change that.
This blog will explain exactly what AMTEP is, how it will prepare you for a career in manufacturing, and how the courses are designed with you in mind.
What is AMTEP?
AMTEP is a manufacturing training program made possible by a coalition of educators, employers, workforce organizations, government agencies and nonprofits. This initiative focuses on providing manufacturing training, at no cost, to unemployed, underemployed and inexperienced career seekers in order to help those people move into fulfilling manufacturing careers. The goal of this Advanced Manufacturing Training Expansion Program is to train more than 900 students and adults for advanced manufacturing careers by 2024.
AMTEP includes 300 hours of technical manufacturing training hosted at vocational schools and conducted by advanced manufacturing educators, hands-on foundational training, detailed tours of manufacturing facilities, and entrance into a variety of industry job fairs.
Upon completion of the program, graduates should be equipped with job readiness skills, and are very often placed directly into roles within well-respected manufacturing companies.
In other words, AMTEP is your first step to becoming a person of legitimate value to manufacturing companies across Massachusetts.
How Can AMTEP Help Me Start a Career?
Before you can truly thrive in a manufacturing role, you need to understand the ins and outs of CNC machining, visit manufacturing facilities, and grasp the big picture of where the components you’re creating will ultimately end up. While you’ll constantly be learning throughout your career in manufacturing, AMTEP courses will give you a serious advantage from your very first day on the job. After completing your AMTEP courses, you’ll have serious value (like Einstein said) that you can offer companies. In addition to gaining the necessary knowledge and skill set, you’ll also have the opportunity to pursue apprenticeship opportunities where you can learn first hand from seasoned manufacturing professionals.
Entry-level positions in manufacturing pay, on average, $18.50 per hour with the potential to earn exponentially more, around $35 per hour, within the first few years of employment. If you’re seeking an opportunity to move out of unemployment or underemployment and want to provide serious value to a company and an industry, then the AMTEP program is designed for you.
I’m Busy Already. How Can I Find the Time for AMTEP Courses?
We understand how challenging it can be to further your professional growth while trying to hold on to the job that’s currently paying your rent, or while raising your children with very little support. But if you’re passionate about starting a new, fulfilling career in manufacturing with tremendous earning potential, then you’ll find that the AMTEP courses are more than accessible.
Thanks to the commitment of community colleges, technical schools and advanced manufacturing educators throughout Massachusetts, trainees will have the opportunity to take AMTEP courses at the location most convenient to them.
