Securing a job in the manufacturing industry takes more than just the right technical skill set. It takes the ability to demonstrate your knowledge about the industry, the specific company you are applying to, and the ability to communicate your potential to the company you are seeking employment from.
Beyond the technical skills required for most manufacturing industry career pathways, employers seek candidates with exceptional communication skills to collaborate effectively with colleagues within the industry and the broader workplace. They are also seeking candidates with strong problem-solving skills to identify and troubleshoot issues within the manufacturing process.
Let’s review some of the ways that you can set yourself up for success during the interview process as you seek employment and a career in the manufacturing industry.
Before Interview Day
As you apply for positions within the manufacturing industry, you will undoubtedly secure interviews as this career path is one that is sustainable and in need of a strong and reliable workforce. As you receive interview offers, there are several things you will want to do before attending the actual interview.
Research the Company
Take some time to research the company you will be interviewing with. Learn about their mission and the products or services they offer. Scroll through any social media accounts they may run to see what you can find out about the public perception of the company and any insight you can gain about the company culture.
Try to determine the types of processes used in this particular company so you can discuss them in your interview. Knowing in advance can help you speak with confidence.
Research the Specific Role
Along with finding out what you can about the company, look into the specific role you are applying for. Review the job description in the hiring advertisement and be prepared to discuss how you align with the role. Practice talking about the certifications you hold and the technical skills you are experienced with through your training.
Prepare or Rehearse Potential Responses to Questions
In your pre-interview preparations, formulate a list of questions that you think may be asked, such as the list of questions published this year by Indeed, titled “Top Interview Questions for Manufacturing Jobs.”
Practicing is key to sounding natural and confident in your answers. Just remember not to overpractice or your answers may sound rehearsed and disingenuous.
The Day of the Interview
Once the big day has arrived, there are several things to do to ensure a positive first impression.
Dress to Impress
While the position you are applying for may not require a shirt and tie, it is essential to dress professionally to make a good first impression. Consider dressing business casual with a collared shirt, ties and clean, pressed pants. Closed-toe shoes are required, as you will be taking a tour of the facility and need safe footwear.
Arrive Early
To ensure you arrive on time for your interview, aim to arrive 15 minutes early. This may involve scouting out the location in advance to determine which door to enter and where to park.
Answer Questions Honestly and Clearly
Now that you are in the interview, talk openly about your training, experience, and goals. Speak slowly, confidently, and clearly. Make eye contact and ask questions about the company and the role you will be playing in it. Show off your expertise by discussing projects you have worked on and training you have received. Don’t exaggerate or lie, but be clear about your knowledge.
After the Interview
It is pretty customary to follow up with an email thanking the interviewer for their time and asking any follow-up questions you may have.
