Overview of a Electronic Technician

An electronic technician tests, builds, and repairs electronic equipment for different companies. These individuals can work in various industries from engineering, broadcasting, and scientific research. Technicians who work for manufacturing companies are involved in testing to final assembly. Those who work in engineering or scientific research install, maintain, and repair instruments used for research and development.

Electronic technicians focus on maintaining and repairing electronic equipment, testing and monitoring systems, calibrating electronic equipment, conducting quality control checks, preparing reports, and making improvements to existing products.

Skills and Competencies of an Electronic Technician

Electronic technicians have to possess the following qualifications and skills: 

  • High school Diploma or GED
  • Associate degree in electronics technology (preferred not required)  
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints 
  • Good troubleshooting skills 
  • Communication Skills 
  • Knowledge of how to terminate RF connectors 
  • Physical ability to lift heavy materials 
  • Knowledge of Spectrum analyzers 
  • Willingness to learn new systems
