Students will learn how to operate manual and CNC Mills and Lathes, blueprint reading, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GDT), introduction to G-Code, and obtain a NIMS (National Institute for Metal Working Skills) CNC Milling and Lathe certification. The North Shore offers evening & Saturday 415-hour programs in spring and fall, as well as a 310-hour daytime summer program, while other regions (Metro North, Lowell, and Merrimack Valley) execute evening 310-hour winter programs.

Overview of a CNC Machine Operator

A CNC machine operator works in the metalworking industry, working on the setup and operation of a computer numerical control machine. In this position, an individual operates CNC machines and routers and uses computer programming skills to sculpt and finish component prototypes. Operators will cut, sculpt, and finish machine component prototypes. While these operators usually work in the metalworking industry, you can also use your skills in areas like the automotive, hardware supply, and housing industries.

Typical responsibilities include reading blueprints for needed parts, inspecting metal pieces for accuracy and uniformity, and performing preventative maintenance on machines.

Skills and Competencies of a CNC Machine Operator

You must exhibit a specific skill set and have certain qualifications to succeed as a CNC machine operator.

These skills include the following:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Associate degree in computer-aided manufacturing (preferred not required)
  • CNC or related experience
  • Knowledge of computer-aided manufacturing and computer-aided design
  • Engineering experience
  • Problem-solving and adaptive skills
  • Communication skills
  • Close attention to detail
  • Physical ability to lift heavy loads of equipment
