We all know it – job hunting is taxing. It can certainly feel overwhelming to browse through hundreds of job openings online, never quite sure which is right for you. This is especially true for those facing unemployment or underemployment, where it can feel like a lot is riding on your job search.

Today, let’s examine some of the mental health connections to job searching and why joining a training course might be the answer you’re looking for.

The Mental Strain of Job Hunting

stressing out over job hunt

Searching for a new job can be exciting. But for those recently unemployed, currently in lackluster working conditions, or fresh out of high school, the job search can be daunting. When trying to build a successful career, it can feel like there’s a certain amount of urgency. This urgency can then lead to excess stress.

According to the Pew Research Center, 70% of unemployed workers felt more stressed than usual during their unemployment. And 56% reported experiencing emotional and mental health-related problems.

A Loss of Identity

When spending hours on end applying to job listing after job listing – or viewing listings that you aren’t qualified for, it’s easy to lose grasp on your self-esteem. There’s nothing like a bout of unemployment to shake up one’s confidence. The Pew Research Center also reports that 53% of unemployed workers felt as though they had lost a piece of their identity. 41% of respondents even reported having more conflicts or arguments with friends, family, and other loved ones during their unemployment.

What’s The Solution?

For many, the solution is to push forward, take breaks when necessary, and remind yourself often that everything will work out. And there are also other more active ways of finding your next career. One of those is by taking part in training courses.

On the North Shore of Massachusetts, those in need of promising new careers can receive no-cost training in the Advanced Manufacturing Training Expansion Program or AMTEP.

What Is AMTEP?

hands-on manufacturing trainees at work and learning

AMTEP is a job training program made to support unemployed or underemployed workers on the North Shore as well as local manufacturing companies. AMTEP provides those interested in a manufacturing career with free training. This training includes hundreds of hands-on training hours, allowing trainees to develop their skills while also receiving on-the-floor experience.

At the end of the course, trainees are often placed into promising new careers at local manufacturing companies via program connections and job placement opportunities. And with the experience gained while participating in AMTEP, those heading out to interviews will have a significant step up on the competition.

This allows trainees to have a more active role in their career search, learning incredible skills along the way.
